Meet the Coaching Staff
Head Coach
Neil Swanson
I am honored to lead the St. Michael-Albertville Boys Basketball program as Head Coach. With over 25 years of coaching and teaching experience, I come to STMA after a long, rewarding tenure at Osseo High School. During my time with the Orioles, I spent 12 years as the JV Head Coach and over a decade as a Varsity Assistant, helping guide teams to State Championships in 2001 and 2012.
STMA has always held a special place for me, having previously served on the Knights staff during the 2014–2015 season. My coaching background also includes serving as a JV and Varsity assistant with Osseo’s Volleyball and Track & Field programs. Outside of coaching, I continue to teach Physical Education at Osseo High School. My wife, Marilyn and I live in Maple Grove and are proud parents of Ty, a junior at Gustavus Adolphus College, and Bree, a freshman at the College of Saint Benedict. I look forward to building on the proud tradition of Knights basketball!
Wyatt Darbyshire
JV Head Coach / Varsity Assistant
My passion is teaching, guiding, and helping athletes reach their full potential on and off the court. Before coming to STMA, I spent four years on the Osseo basketball coaching staff, and I have also spent time coaching track and field.
In addition to coaching, I work in Special Education.
Outside of school and athletics, I enjoy spending quality time with my wife and family, and following sports. I’m thrilled to be a part of this program and can't wait for the season ahead.
Joey Sonnenfeld
Varsity Assistant
Coach Joey Sonnefeld is entering his first year as a Varsity Assistant Coach with the Knights basketball program.
He brings a wealth of athletic and coaching experience to STMA, including eight years of football coaching and three years coaching girls basketball—serving as both a varsity assistant and co-head coach—at Osseo High School. In addition to his sports coaching background, Joey has worked as a sports performance coach at both Osseo and N1 Motion, and has served as a Physical Education teacher at Osseo for the past 10 years.
Outside of teaching and coaching, Joey is married to his wife, Mikayla, and they have three children: Blake, Isaiah, and Myles.
Joey is excited to join the STMA community and looks forward to helping develop student-athletes while contributing to the success of the basketball program.

Sam Frederickson
Assistant Coach
I grew up in Plymouth, Minnesota, and attended Heritage Christian Academy, where I played basketball and baseball. I went on to graduate from Saint John’s University with a degree in Global Business and Leadership. I currently live in Corcoran.
I have been coaching basketball for the past three years, previously serving as a boys varsity assistant at Heritage Christian Academy and coaching in the 8A travel programs for both STMA and Wayzata. In addition, I serve as the Boys Basketball Director for MN Crossfire.
I’m excited for the season ahead and look forward to becoming part of the STMA basketball community!
Joey MillerÂ
B Team Head Coach
Joey Miller is a former STMA basketball player and proud alumnus who has been coaching within the program for the past five years. He began by helping with the STMA travel program for two seasons before moving into a 9th grade coaching role. For the past two years, Joey has served as the JV coach at STMA.
Outside of basketball, Joey works in the STMA School District as a paraprofessional. This season, he is excited to take on a new role coaching the 10th grade team and looks forward to continuing to develop players and help build the future of STMA Basketball.
Frank Simmons
9th Grade A Team Head Coach
Frank Simmons has been a proud member of the STMA community for the past 17 years and currently works as a paraprofessional at Middle School East. He is deeply invested in supporting STMA students, families, and the greater community.
Frank is the parent of four children, three of whom graduated from STMA and participated in STMA athletics. His coaching experience includes travel basketball, AAU basketball, middle school boys’ and girls’ basketball, and the past three seasons with the STMA Boys Basketball program.
In addition to basketball, Frank has coached in the STMA football program for 15 years and has approximately four years of high school baseball coaching experience. Throughout his time at STMA, he has built strong relationships with students, families, and fellow coaches while helping young athletes grow and develop both on and off the court and field.
Jarrett Campbell
9th Grade B Team Head Coach
Jarrett Campbell is a former NCAA Division II basketball player and current coach with the STMA Boys Basketball program. He brings a leadership-driven approach to coaching, emphasizing competitiveness, discipline, accountability, and player development while helping athletes grow both on and off the court.
Outside of basketball, Jarrett serves as a Senior Relationship Manager in Business Banking and is an active leader in the community. His professional and athletic experiences allow him to bring a strong perspective on leadership, teamwork, relationships, and personal growth to the STMA Basketball program.
